QR codes on packaging give brands a direct channel to the customer at the moment the product is in their hands, which is the most receptive point in the entire purchase and post-purchase journey.

The carton surface has always been a communication tool, but its capacity is fixed. There are only so many panels, and they compete with mandatory information, structural graphics, and legal copy.

A QR code resolves that constraint by turning a small reserved space into a link to anything: a product page, a video, a loyalty sign-up, a reorder flow, or a sustainability disclosure that the carton itself could never carry in full.

What QR Codes on Packaging Can Do

1. Connect Customers to Content Beyond the Label

The most immediate use for a QR code on outer packaging is extending the information available to the customer without crowding the carton box.

A code placed on the back or base panel can link to a full ingredient breakdown, an allergen guide, a how-to-use video, or a product range page; content that is genuinely useful but impractical to print at legible size on a standard carton.

For food and beverage brands, this is increasingly relevant as customers look more closely at what they are buying. For healthcare and personal care products, it provides a route to detailed usage guidance that supports both compliance and customer confidence.

In each case, the QR code does not replace the printed information, it supplements it with depth the carton cannot carry on its own.

2. Support Loyalty, Reorder, and Post-Purchase Flows

A QR code scanned after purchase lands the customer at a point where they have already made a buying decision. That moment is well-suited to loyalty programme sign-ups, repeat purchase links, and review requests.

Brands in FMCG, beauty, and personal care have found the post-purchase scan particularly effective for driving repeat business because the destination can be set to a direct reorder page rather than a general website.

The scan becomes a one-step reorder trigger rather than the start of a navigation journey.

3. Dynamic QR Codes and Campaign Tracking

QR codes come in two types:

a) Static Code

Encodes a fixed URL directly into its pattern, and the destination cannot be changed once the code is printed.

b) Dynamic Code

Encodes a short redirect URL, with the actual destination managed through a platform that can be updated at any time without reprinting the packaging.

Dynamic codes are the more useful choice for most packaging applications. The destination can be changed to reflect seasonal campaigns, updated product information, or new promotional offers without requiring a new production run.

Getting QR Codes Right in Print

1. Size, Quiet Zone, and Contrast

A QR code that fails to scan is worse than no QR code. It signals a broken experience at the worst possible moment. Three print variables determine whether a code scans reliably.

a) Minimum Size

A QR code on packaging should be no smaller than 2 cm × 2 cm for standard smartphone cameras at a typical hand-held distance, with larger sizes warranted for codes with high data density.

b) Quiet Zone

The clear margin surrounding the code must be maintained at a minimum of four module widths on all sides; printing elements or text into this zone disrupts the scanner’s ability to locate the code boundary.

c) Contrast

The code requires sufficient tonal difference between the module colour and the background.

Black on white is the most reliable combination, but dark modules on a pale solid are workable. Light modules on a dark background scan poorly and should be avoided.

2. Substrate and Finish Compatibility

The surface the QR code is printed on affects scan performance. Gloss lamination can introduce reflective glare that interferes with camera-based scanning in bright light conditions.

If the wider carton carries a gloss laminate, specifying a localised matte patch over the QR code area addresses this without altering the overall finish specification.

Embossing and debossing should not be applied to or immediately around a QR code, as the surface relief distorts the module geometry and will cause scan failures.

These finishing decisions need to be mapped against the QR code placement before the artwork is finalised.

3. Placement on the Carton

The most effective placement for a consumer-facing QR code is a panel that is visible and accessible when the product is in use or on shelf.

The front panel is rarely the right location, as it competes with primary graphics and tends to read as a visual intrusion rather than a useful addition.

Wherever it sits, the code should be accompanied by a short instruction line, such as ‘Scan for more information’ or ‘Scan to reorder’, that tells the customer what they will get before they scan.
